For information about the specific number of weeks of paid parental leave provided at your location, please contact the Human Resources department.
Excelligence will provide paid parental leave to employees following the birth of an employee’s child/children or the placement of a child/children with an employee in connection with adoption, foster care, guardianship or surrogacy and for any other reason required by applicable law. The purpose of paid parental leave is to enable the employee to care for and bond with a newborn or a newly adopted or newly placed child, and enable additional time to adjust to the new family situation.
This policy will run concurrently with Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave and/or its state counterparts, as applicable. Therefore, any leave taken under this paid parental leave policy will be counted toward the twelve (12) (or more as required by law) weeks of available FMLA/state leaves per a twelve (12) month period. Paid parental leave under this policy also will run concurrently with any state or municipal-mandated paid parental/paid family leaves for which the employee is eligible to the maximum extent permitted by law.
The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal law that provides eligible employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year for certain family and medical reasons, including pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum recovery. This ensures that expectant and new mothers can take the necessary time off for their health and the well-being of their newborn without fear of losing their job.
To qualify for FMLA, you must:
FMLA leave is unpaid, but some employers allow or require employees to use accrued paid leave (such as vacation or sick leave) during FMLA time.
Short-term disability (STD) insurance can provide financial support for new mothers during maternity leave by replacing a portion of their income while they recover from childbirth. Excelligence offers STD coverage as a benefit.
If you “work” in any of the states listed below, you may be eligible for a State Paid Leave
*Please see your local state website for Eligibility, Qualifying Reasons, Weekly Benefit Amount and more!
If you are planning on taking a leave of absence, start thinking about that now. Alert your supervisor of your expected leave dates. If you qualify, you may be eligible for a protected leave of absence, Family Medical Leave Act, (FMLA) where you can qualify for up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job protected leave for the actual birth and/or bonding of your baby. If you qualify for FMLA, you may take up to 12 weeks or 480 hours in a 12 month period. This leave may be taken in one lump sum, or can be used in increments of “hours” for doctors appointments as well as the actual maternity leave. You will have a total of 480 hours to use. If you are requesting FMLA for doctor’s visits, you will need to request FMLA paperwork for your physician to complete at onset of pregnancy.
*FMLA protects your position while you are out – but does not include any type of compensation.
If you signed up for Short Term Disability (STD), you will also start a claim once you get closer to your due date. This is usually 6-8 weeks of covered leave at 60% of your pay. Your STD will run concurrent with your FMLA, but BEFORE your Paid Parental Leave through Excelligence, benefit. You can find the instructions on starting a claim by phone or website HERE. There is a 7 day waiting period for benefits. You may use your accrued PTO hours for this week, if you would like.
FMLA is ideally supposed to be requested at least 30 days before the start of leave for something foreseeable. Obviously it is not always possible depending on the reason for leave though, and if you don’t know the exact days you are taking off that may not work.
Please see your local HR manager to discuss a “non-FMLA leave of absence”. This leave will be unpaid and your position, while we will try to hold it, is not guaranteed.
Please let your supervisor know when your STD claim is completed. Your supervisor will alert our payroll department to start paid parental leave. If you are a father, see your local HR manager to request your time off, (FMLA and/or PPL)
We don’t want you to worry about anything except your new bundle of joy. This includes your benefit premiums. If you request PTO and/or Paid Parental Leave, we will take your premiums. Otherwise, upon your return, please get with your Benefit Manager, Lori Jaklevich, to find out how much you owe and to make payment arrangements.
* Please note, if you plan on adding the baby to your current medical coverage with Excelligence, you will need to let your Benefit Manager, Lori Jaklevich know at your earliest convenience with full name and date of birth. Please follow-up with babies social security number as soon as you receive it.
